Release anxiety, stress and the pain of the past (without having to re-live it again and again)

If you’ve been carrying stress, anxiety, or the emotional weight of past experiences—your body keeps the score.

Even when you try to “move on,” your nervous system remembers.

It's a protective mechanism to try and keep you safe, but the problem is that it usually causes harm more often than it helps.

You might feel it as tightness in your chest, racing thoughts, or sudden overwhelm that comes out of nowhere.

Maybe you've developed an irrational fear or phobia, or you've stopped doing certain things because it can be triggering.

That’s where Havening and somatic psychosensory therapy can help.

Grounded in neuroscience, this somatic therapy helps release negative emotions safely, using simple gentle touch and distractions for the thinking mind.

Watch the introductory video below or keep reading to learn how it can help you.

What is Havening?

Havening is a gentle yet powerful (and fast-acting) psychosensory technique designed to help you release trauma (both big 'T' and little 't'), regulate emotions, and rewire your brain for greater peace, resilience, and wellbeing.

It uses specific types of soothing touch—on the hands, arms, and face—to create an electrochemical state of safety in the brain and body.

This shifts your brainwaves, calms your nervous system, and allows old negative emotional responses to soften and dissolve.

The name “Havening” comes from the word haven—a safe place, which is what the technique creates within the mind and body.

How it works (the neuroscience behind it)

Your brain contains approximately 86 billion neurons, which communicate through electrochemical signals.

These signals travel across synaptic gaps, strengthening connections that are used often—especially during times of trauma or stress.

When a traumatic memory forms, it becomes encoded with high emotional intensity. This is why, even years later, remembering the event can trigger anxiety, panic, or shame.

Havening helps to disrupt or weaken those neural pathways (a process called synaptic depotentiation), effectively delinking the emotional charge from the memory.

You still remember what happened—but it no longer feels triggering or painful.

There’s no more panic, no tightness, no spiraling thoughts—just space, calm, and clarity.

FAQs

What happens during a Havening session?

During a session, you’ll be guided through gentle self-touch techniques (on your face, arms, and hands) combined with visualisation, breathwork, and calming language. You’ll be fully awake and in control the whole time. The process is soothing, supportive, and paced to your comfort.

Do I have to talk about my trauma or painful memories?

Not necessarily. While we may explore events that have impacted you, we don’t need to go into graphic or detailed retellings. Havening works by helping the brain and body feel safe—it’s not talk therapy. If you prefer, we can work symbolically, focusing on sensations or emotions rather than specific memories.

Is this similar to hypnosis/hypnotherapy?

No, Havening is not hypnosis. You stay fully conscious and alert the entire session. It uses gentle touch and neuroscience-based techniques to create a calming, brain-state shift—not a trance, however as I am a Hypnotherapist I do combine and blend modalities depending on the needs of the client. Learn more about Hypnotherapy.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different. Some clients experience significant relief after 1–2 sessions, while others benefit from a series of sessions to support deeper trauma reprocessing or emotional regulation. We'll discuss your goals and tailor a plan to suit your needs during our 30-minute consultation.

What qualifications do you have?

Janelle Kee-Sue is a Certified Life and Mindset Coach with the Transformation Academy, accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Practitioner, Self-Hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner with the NZ School of Professional Hypnotherapy, she is completing her Havening Certification, and is completing a Diploma in Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapy and NLP with the New Zealand School of Professional Hypnotherapy.

Can it be done online or in person?

Both. My office is based in Camborne, Porirua in Wellington for in-person sessions, but Havening is also very effective online. I’ll guide you through the process via Google Meet, and you’ll use self-touch techniques on yourself during the session. All you need is a quiet, private space and a stable internet connection.

What’s the difference between Havening and traditional therapy?

Traditional talk therapy often focuses on insight, storytelling, and reflection. Havening, on the other hand, is neuroscience-based and body-focused. It works by directly shifting the electrochemical state of the brain, creating emotional safety in the body and helping to rewire unhelpful neural pathways. It’s gentle, effective, and complements many other healing modalities.

Is Havening safe?

Yes. Havening is considered a safe and non-invasive technique. It uses natural, calming touch and doesn’t involve any medication or forceful interventions. However, if you have a complex trauma history or psychiatric diagnosis, we can discuss whether this is the right fit for you.

I’m not sure I’m “traumatised” – is this still for me?

Absolutely. Havening isn’t just for trauma. It’s also powerful for daily stress, anxiety, self-doubt, low mood, and building confidence. Whether you're dealing with emotional baggage from the past or just want to feel more grounded and resilient in the present, Havening can support you.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, you can pay for in full, monthly, fortnightly or weekly. Simply discuss your options with Janelle.

What happens if I can't make my session?

If you are unable to make a session you must let Janelle know at least 24 hours in advance to reschedule your session. If 24 hours' notice isn't possible, you will only be able to reschedule if there is availability. If you are unable to make your rescheduled session, it will be cancelled and a refund cannot be provided. You would then move onto your next scheduled session and skip the session that was cancelled.
